Deborah schloss ihre Ausbildung in Tanz und Tanzpädagogik im Jahr 1990 an der Royal Ballett School in London ab. Anschließend tanzte sie in verschiedenen Opernhäusern (u.a. Nordhausen, Nürnberg, München, Kassel, Braunschweig und Konstanz) und arbeitet seit über 30 Jahre als freischaffende Tänzerin, Choreografin und Pädagogin in Deutschland und darüber hinaus.2007 gründete sie die professionelle Berufsfachschule für zeitgenössischen Bühnentanz “SOZO visions in motion” und 2010 die gleichnamige Tanzkompanie. Zusammen mit ihrem Mann Michael Wicke kreierte sie HALLE 2, einen Tanzraum zum Trainieren, Proben und für Aufführungen. Das Quan Dao Kung Fu inspiriert und beeinflusst ihre Arbeit. 2012 und 2015 gewann sie den Kulturpreis der Stadt Kassel und 2019 den Anneliese Hartleb Kulturpunkt Preis. Für drei Jahre unterrichtete sie zeitgenössischen Tanz im Bachelor-und Masterprogramm der Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz. Ihre größte Leidenschaft ist es, Menschen zu ermutigen und etwas zu ermöglichen.
Über ihre Arbeit sagt sie...
Meine Kunst, oder mehr, um zu sagen, meine Manöver zu arbeiten und als Künstlerin zu leben, hatte immer die Absicht, eine Vision in anderen zu fördern und sie zu inspirieren, ihre Visionen zu verwirklichen. Meine Kunst entsteht ständig aus den Rahmenbedingungen die ich erschaffe, und in denen KünstlerInnen mit mir arbeiten. Meine tägliche Motivation ist die Neugier auf lebenslanges Lernen gepaart mit der gesellschaftlichen Pflicht und Leidenschaft, KünstlerInnen zu helfen, gut zu leben und ihnen Raum und Gelegenheit zu schaffen, dies zu tun. Mit einem starken klassischen Hintergrund konnte ich in einer Vielzahl von Genres von Neoklassik bis Zeitgenössisch, vom Tanztheater bis hin zu Performance, Installation und konzeptueller Arbeit, entdecken und arbeiten.

Deborah Smith-Wicke completed her dance education and a pedagogical diploma at the Royal Ballett School in London in 1990. She danced in opera houses (including Nordhausen, Nuremberg, Munich, Kassel, Braunschweig and Konstanz) and now works freelance as a dancer, choreographer and teacher in Germany and abroad for almost 30 years.
In 2007 she founded "SOZO visions in motion"; a professional state-recognized vocational school for contemporary stage dance in Kassel and in 2010 a dance theater company. She has created the space, HALLE 2 with her husband Michael Wicke, a dance house in Kassel for training, rehearsals and performance. Quan Dao Kung Fu constantly inspires and influences her work. In 2012 and 2015 she won the Culture Prize of the City of Kassel and in 2019 she won the Anneliese Hartleb Kulturpunkt Prize. She has also been teaching contemporary dance and movement research in the BA and MA programs at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz. Her biggest passion is to encourage and enable.
About her work she says...
“My art, or more to say my manoeuvres of working and living as an artist has always had the intent to encourage a vision in others and to inspire them to act towards realizing it. My art is continually being born out of the situations I create for the artists to work with me. My daily motivation is the curiosity for life-long learning coupled with the social duty and passion to help artists live well and to create space and opportunity for them to do so. With a strong classical background, I have been able to discover and work in a diverse range of genres from neo classical to contemporary, from Tanztheater to performance, installation and conceptual work.”
